The eHealth VdA project
uses low-cost web technologies to share patients’ medical files between general
practitioners and specialists distributed throughout the territory, and with
resident hospital personnel.
The integrated local
healthcare system set up in eHealth VdA is equipped to synchronise patients’
medical files on a daily basis. The data, input by healthcare professionals in
the field and within the hospital, includes for example the patient ID,
allergies, vaccines, reports from clinical laboratories and medical diagnoses.
The project uses the
internet to integrate actions by family doctors and paediatricians with the
regional healthcare structure more easily, through the use of a single folder
per patient within a database structure. The doctor's clinical file on a
patient is integrated with the data used by the Enterprise Resource Planning
platform that the local healthcare provider uses as a business management
system.
In this type of
application, it is of course critical to assure the confidentiality and
protection of the medical data of the citizen-patient at all times, the project
organisers stress. To achieve a greater degree of
efficiency in diagnostics, 100% of the regional operators share data and
application systems.
The system is always
available and within reach of the healthcare provider for ease of use.
Moreover, the system allows some reduction in the need for patients to travel
in order to be physically present at centralised healthcare facilities, such as
hospitals and clinics.
